RIDES FOR 3 OCTOBER 2010

Good afternoon fellow velos and welcome to this weeks pedalathon around the Chiltern Plaines. This weekend our man in the sky has slept all week and I have been unable to arrange our usual summer weather. So for this week I have only planned one route, a sort of in betweeny distance. This should allow us to return back reasonably quickly should things deteriate or if I can wake the old fella up, add a few extra miles should we feel like it. As ever the route is available via the following link. 3 Oct Route. See you all Sunday Morning.

And a further reminder that Dave Bembridge will be doing his short cycle tomorrow morning leaving the R&C at 11.30 am.

Please also remeber that the 10 October 2010 ride will be the charity ride from Aldbury. Full details will be issued early next week.

Rides for 26 September 2010

Welcome to this weeks rides, as usual there are two on offer starting from the Rose and Crown. Our first ride can only be compared to the three peaks challenge, except that there is no walking, or transport arranged between peaks. Oh, and there might be more or less than 3 peaks, and they won’t be so high. Otherwise the long ride is very similar. This route exhilerates for almost 24 miles leaving, little time to appreciate the wild flowers at the side of the road. Surely another challenge too far for Jack!

And now for the short ride, aka the twin peaks challenge, again remarkably not similar to anything by a similar name. This route meanders for a gentle 13 miles, through some of the most dramatic and breathtaking British countryside. Be sure to take it gently so as not to miss anything!

As ever fabulous weather has been arranged. Please take a look at our new local forecast. And on our return, the Rose and Crown is pleased to announce the addition of Bacon Rolls to its menu. Remember this is valuable source of carbs and should be consumed in the “golden hour”.

And one more matter before you all nod off reading this dribble, don’t forget to let Dave know if you will be attending any of the visiting mechanic sessions, so that numbers can be concluded.

Update & Forthcoming Events

Great turn out on Sunday with 12 ‘velos’ out and thanks to the Robin Hood for the excellent organisation and a fun ride, it was also reported that one of the team completed the 15 mile circuit in a fanstastic 38 minutes, anyone owning up?  Thanks also to the Tring Lions for marshalling the ride who helped to make it a ROARING success!

Well done also to Rich Parsons for completing his Waddesdon 100 mile challenge in just over 6 hours!

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

The usual Sunday rides will be going out but in addition please be aware for your diaries:

SATURDAY 9TH OCTOBER

Dave Bembridge has provisionally arranged for Sam from MBRS UK Ltd our local mobile bike mechanic to give basic mechanics training at the Rose and Crown.  This is a 2 hour session 10-12 and then 1-3 the cost of this session is a very reasonable £15 per person.  Sam is highly recommended by a number of the group, including Andrew, and his credentials are well noted on his website.  For those wanting to take part please either speak to Dave or send your interest through this site by Sunday 26th September.

SUNDAY 10th OCTOBER

Charity rides out of Aldbury along similar lines to last Sunday timings may differ slightly from our normal Sunday start and further details will follow next week

Good luck to Hannah Beezer ( a true cyclist unlike her ‘baby’ brother?) returning for her final year at Sheffield Uni!

So when does this pub open?

Lycra, what lycra?

Rides – Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th September

Ladies & Gents

On Saturday Dave Bembridge will be leading out an 8 mile ride starting from the Rose & Crown leaving at 11:30, this is a great opportunity for those of you who are, or know of people, nervous of joining the Sunday rides and lycra is definitely NOT required!

On Sunday we will have 2 routes going out as follows:

SHORT RIDE – 14 MILES

LONG RIDE – 24 MILES

We are looking to join the Robin Hood Pub‘s Annual Charity Bike Ride.  This aims to raise funds for, Tring based Iain Rennie Hospice at Home (IRHH).  Refreshments will be offered along the way as entrants pedal their way from Tring along a testing 15.5-mile route through Wigginton, Cholesbury, and St Leonards.  It then continues through Wendover Woods, Aston Clinton and along The Lower Icknield Way.  In its fourth year, the annual ride has so far raised more than £5500 for the hospice.

We will leave as normal at 10:00am on Sunday from the R&C as a group anyone wishing to do the short route will then carry on as those doing the long route stop to register at the Robin Hood.  Once we arrive back at the Robin Hood we can ‘re-group’, maybe have a quick ‘sherbert’ before returning to the R&C the same way we came.  Registration for the Robin Hood Ride is £2 per person and we are suggesting we each pay £5 to help the fundraising, of course anyone wanting to donate more is more than welcome!  This money will be paid individually when we first arrive at the Robin Hood.

Here’s to a great weekend in the saddle!!

Vinghoe Velos win ‘honours’

Last weekend saw several members of the Vinghoe Velos take on their supreme challenges with many gaining honours for their efforts.  These included a number of successes at the highly prestigious Ivinghoe Flower and Vegetable Show held on Saturday.  Amongst the honours there was First places for,  Angela Hollands, Lucy Ashton, the Beezers (they can fight over who were the true winners!) and several second and third places with the Hetherington Cherry Tomatoes getting a second place!

Steeped in their ‘glory’ Jose and Andrew headed off to Bath to take on the Wessex 100 (miles!) on Sunday.  Whoever says the Salisbury Plain is flat wants to think again!  Facing continual head winds (how can that be possible when you are doing a circular ride?!) and a severely undulating route sadly Andrew was forced to retire in a ‘messy heap’ after 75 miles whilst Jose went on to complete the ride, a tremendous effort!!

This weekend sees the Vinghoe Velos joining the Robin Hood Charity Ride in Tring on Sunday leaving the R&C as usual at 10:00 on Sunday, Dave Bembridge will be leading out a short ride on Saturday.   Final details for both of these rides will be published on Thursday.

Rides – Sunday 12th September 2010

Welcome to the launch of the new website!  The address for this site is http://www.ivinghoevelos.org.uk/ and this site will allow you to leave feedback, suggestions and comments.  There is no need for anyone receiving this email directly to sign up to the mailing list on the website as you will receive all updates from it as you are already on the list.

Not only would we like to thank John for all of his work but commend him for doing so whilst his wife was having their 3rd child!  Congratulations!

Dave has kindly arranged for Sam from MBRS to give some basic Bike maintenance training at the R&C on Saturday 9th October.  This will include brake and gear adjustments as well as that ever important ‘dishing’ (straightening your wheel!).  Full details will follow next week but please put the date in your diaries.

As usual we will set off on Sunday at 10:00am from the R&C rides as follows:

LONG ROUTE – (26 miles) contains a couple of stretches of busy roads heading through Horton and and also on the A413 near Aylesbury.  Please remember to concentrate and be fully aware of other road users particularly on these stretches where there will be fast moving motorised vehicles!

SHORT ROUTE – (14 Miles) follows the  long route to Wing before returning through Mentmore to the pub!

Good luck to anyone doing the Churches Ride on Saturday, if anyone wants information please send us a message.  We intend to join the Robin Hood ride out of Tring on Sunday 19th and again we will post more details next week on here.

Gary, Jose and Andrew (all technical support from John!)

Rides – Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th September 2010

Ladies and Gents

Please find below somewhat late in the day this weekends rides. As usual start at 10.00 from the R&C. For those wanting their first ride or a short route Dave Bembridge is doing a ride out from about 11.30 on saturday. Approx 7 miles.

Sunday Rides –

Short Ride – 15 Miles

Long Ride – 21 Miles

Gary

Ride – Sunday 29th August 2010

Well done !

A tremendous turn out last week with some 18 intrepid riders turning out and great to see some more new faces! Thanks also for the really positive feedback on the rides and whilst I neither got stung or fell off, it is noted that we had one wasp sting and one fall off in the group (both with no long lasting effects).

(i)Vinghoe Velo is everybody’s ‘club’ and as much input to Gary, Jose and myself is needed.

Dave Bembridge has proposed a shorter ride (say 7 miles) perhaps every other Saturday to enable us to widen the appeal of cycling to those who may feel intimidated by a 15 mile ride, we would create a route and have someone lead it and comments and feedback on this would be appreciated, certainly Dave and I have volunteered to lead them if there is a call for them.

Finally several people have asked about the cycling jerseys the site I use is www.love2pedal.com have a look if nothing else the logos make you smile, although be wary of the sizing! Will Hollands is wearing the ‘club’ shirt on Sunday and for guidance that is an XL, whilst I will be sporting my rather bright jersey which has a few more Xs before the L!!

Short Ride – 16 miles

Long Ride – 27 miles

Look forward to seeing you all,

Andrew

Ride – Sunday 22nd August 2010

Hi all!

In Gary’s absence please find attached the rides for this week, meeting at 10.00 am as normal, you will note that I have avoided water this time!!

The last 3 weeks we have had 15 riders each Sunday and it would be good if, despite Gary and the Beezers being on holidays we could achieve a similar number, so PLEASE try and introduce a friend to the (I)Vinghoe Veloes and drag them along with you. Another new and even brighter (better fitting too!) cycling jersey will be on display 🙂 modeled by yours truly and in the hope it will scare off the wasps!

Remember we have set this club up to be a social ‘low key’ ride and it would be good if everyone could take their turn to accompany and encourage the ‘slower’ riders and more importantly that we all take responsibility for our fellow riders safety! The last couple of weeks we have managed to get ‘lost’ on a few occasions so it would be good if we could all take 10 mins to study the routes! Sorry to those of you that have those thingamejigs I cannot work out how to download the GPS co-ordinates for the rides 🙁

WE do not have any greater right over the road than those pesky motorists so lest extend to them the courtesy we expect from them.

Short Route – 14 miles

Long Route – 23 miles

Hope to see you all on Sunday

Andrew and Jose

Ride – Sunday 15th August 2010

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Please find below the rides for this Sunday. As usual there is one long and one shorter route. If you take a look at the maps there is a URL, which will if you tap into your machines, allow those of you with GPS to down load the co-ordinates to your diddly watsits.

This will be my last ride until September as I shall be on my Hols, so Andrew and Jose have volunteered to take the handlebars after this Sunday. If you have any rides during this time that you would like to do, please let them know.

Short Ride – 16 miles

Long Ride – 22 miles

Thanks

Gary
