Velos rides for Sunday 21st October 2018

Doing it for Dan – 24 hour ride next weekend.

Firstly, a massive thanks to all of you who have signed up to the Doing it for Dan 24 hour relay. We are so grateful for the support shown by you lovely people.

However, we still have 7 hour-long slots that need a prime rider to carry the baton. If you were on the fence about joining us now is the time to step up and do your bit for a great cause. More details including how to sign up can be found on our original post. If you have any queries or need to borrow a light and battery pack, please ask.

John will be in touch with all the riders this week to firm up the details.

Sunday Rides

Three on offer this week including a very interesting 9am ride by Dave Howe to visit the Frederick Bidlake Memorial.

Frederick Thomas Bidlake was an English racing cyclist of the late 19th century who became one of the most notable administrators of British road bicycle racing during the early 20th century. The annual Bidlake Memorial Prize, was instituted in his memory. Bidlake favoured the tricycle, winning championships and setting national records, often beating bicycle riders. As a member of the North Road Cycling Club, he helped organise a rebel individual time trial, in October 1895, at a time when the National Cyclists’ Union had banned racing on roads.

The weather looks fab so we would like to encourage all riders to join this 9am ride. We will split in to two groups, one at a normal pace and one at the usual 9am quick pace.

9am start, Visit to the Frederick Bidlake memorial

10am start, 42 lumpy miles

10am start, 21 miles

As always, please bring a copy of your chosen route with you.

Doing it for Dan

We’ve had a good few sign-ups for the 24 hour,  relay ride in support of 11 year old, Dan and his family. There are still plenty of free slots though so please join us, be part of something special and help a local family through a really tough time.

The event starts at 1pm on Saturday 27th and will finish at noon on Sunday 28th. Entry is easy – start by adding your name to this list here – Doing it For Dan Spreadsheet of Supporters

For more info about Dan and the events being run to raise money for this cause, have a look at the Doing it for Dan Facebook page.

24 Hour Ride for Dan

Some of you may be aware of a young, local chap named Dan who recently was diagnosed with stage 4 Burkitt’s Lymphoma – a horrible form of cancer that has already manifested itself as a sizeable tumour on his spine. He is likely to be in hospital for the next 6 months whist he undergoes chemotherapy. This is putting a considerable strain on his family.

A number of people from the local villages have started a Just Giving page and put some events on to raise some money to help Dan and his family. We thought it would be great if the Ivinghoe Velos (and friends) could do something to help. So we have put together a challenge – for us to do a 24 hour relay ride ! The idea is that on the hour, we start a nominated Prime Rider who cycles a 15 mile circuit starting from Cheddington. They complete their loop within the hour and had over the baton to the next rider and so on till we have completed 360 miles. If we get enough people, no one will have to ride more than 15 miles, but we know there will be those of you that want to do more, so we will also encourage Support Riders who can ride any of the circuits accompanying the prime rider.

This event will start at 1pm on Saturday 27th October and complete at midday on Sunday 27th October (the clocks will be going back so the timing is a bit odd). If you are interested – or would like more info about the cause, please head on over to this online form (which also has links to the Just Giving and Facebook pages) and put your name down for the hour that you would like to ride. If you would like to talk to someone in person about this, please have a word with John or Elke Hegarty. Details like the route etc will follow on soon.

Velos rides for Sunday 16th September 2018

Our rides this week will ride by Musette, a new cycling themed cafe in Aldbury. Stopping here is optional, but it would be nice to give our support to a local business just starting out especially if we are all wearing our Velos kit.

9am start, 50 miles

10am start, 36 miles

10am start, 20 miles

We would like to remind everyone that our motto is “no one gets left behind”. If you are riding in a group, please keep tabs on the rider behind you. If they start to drop off the back, give a shout to those in front of you to easy up a bit for them to get back on. If there is a natural split in the group in terms of the pace that you want to go at, discuss it with your fellow riders and make sure everyone is aware of the decision to split.

Many thanks to Dave B and Dave H for planning the routes this week.
