This really is summer time …

To be fair, we were blessed with a very dry winter which meant that we had some super rides that while cold, they didn’t involve puddles.

Our intrepid tea riders had a fab time today despite the less than ideal conditions so don’t let weather put you off joining the Velos ride tomorrow morning, even if you have to resort to dusting off the hybrid or mountain bike. As always, we gather together at the Rose and Crown from 9:50am.

Ride details for Sunday 24th June 2012

The weather forecast for tomorrow is a bit hit & miss but as always, our rides go ahead rain or shine.

Long Route

Our friends at Ivinghoe Entertainments tell us that there are still tickets available for the Laughter on the Lawn event on Saturday 23rd June featuring comedy legend Arthur Smith. Please head on over to the Ivinghoe Entertainments website for details of where to buy tickets.

Eurovision Vinghoe Velos Celebration Ride

We here at Velos Towers are so sure that true Brit, Engelbert Humperdinck is certain to win the Eurovision Song Contest that we are declaring Sunday 27th May’s bike ride a Celebration Ride. Please join us as we recycle another well worn route that involves the odd hill or two. As always, we pride ourselves in never leaving a man (or woman for that matter) behind so we welcome all abilities to ride with us.

The weather is looking scorchio so please stock up on the water bottles and sun screen.

Long Route

Mary has kindly offered to lead out a shorter ride of around 18 miles at a sensible, more leisurely pace that will appeal to everyone, including those who haven’t ridden for a while and are looking to get back out in the fresh air. The route is being perfected as we write so see Mary for the full details.

The event kicks off at 10am at the Rose & Crown Ivinghoe so please arrive around 9:50am so you can soak up the pre-ride atmosphere.

P.S. Apologies for the late posting – we were enjoying a bit of sunbathing in the garden earlier today and fell asleep. Luckily, we were wearing our speedos so the sunburn shouldn’t affect our ability to sit on a saddle.

Velos ride for Sunday 13th May 2012

Apologies for the late posting – we here at Velos Towers were distracted today by the appearance of a strange round yellow object in the sky. We are still not quite sure what it is but we hope it hangs around long enough for the ride tomorrow as it does appear to be keeping the rain away.

We do have an announcement to make about our webmaster John regarding navigation. We are officially banning him from making any suggestions as to which direction is the right way when presented with a junction. This is as a direct result of him sending the rear pack of riders last week on a merry dance that involved a visit to Dunstable and Bison hill – both which weren’t on the map. So if you do hear him suggest a direction to go, simply take the opposite route confident that you are ‘going the right way’. As a precaution, we suggest that all riders print out the map so they can get back home if they have ignored the warnings and ended up following John ‘off piste’.

And so, on to this week. As always, please gather from 9:45am at the Rose and Crown Ivinghoe. Members who want to add a few extra miles before the main event are welcome to meet at Pitstone Roundabout at 9am.

Long Route

Short Route

P.S. We are always interested in new routes so please do send them in to us if you have crafted something different from the 10 or so regular rides we recycle each week.

Rides for Sunday 15th April 2012

We were very pleased to see more new riders join us last week. Welcome and we look forward to cycling with you again soon.

And so, on to this week’s Sunday two-wheeled adventure. A few members have planned a pre-ride warm-up route to add a few extra fast-ish miles before the main event. They are planning to meet at Pitstone Roundabout at 9am and will welcome any members who would like to join them.

The main rides are listed below and will leave the Rose & Crown at the usual time of 10am sharp, so please aim to gather from 9:45am. Due to public demand, we have reinstated the short route.

Long Route – 25 miles

Short Route – 17 Miles

Hope you can make it on what is forecast to be a dry morning.

We ain’t no fools

While the temperatures for our 1st April ride won’t be a patch on the mini heat wave we enjoyed this week, our insiders at the Met Office tell us it should be a dry & bright morning. Having said that, please do look out the window before choosing the appropriate numbers of layers to wear tomorrow because our insider also advises the government on what to do when fuel shortages are projected – and we all know how that went this week.

As always, please assemble at the Rose & Crown Ivinghoe around 9:45am.

Long Route

Short Route

Cycle safe.

Mid-week off-road plus News from Velos Towers

We have three items for you in our mid-week post : off-road ride scheduled for Thursday evening, French adventure planned for September and a update on Andrew and Jose’s charity ride.

Off Road Ride

So first off, we are putting a call out for any off-road riders who would like to join the normal Thursday evening muddy trek around the local villages. We are meeting up on the 22nd (i.e. tomorrow) at the Pitstone Memorial Hall at 7pm sharp. Our in-house navigation specialist Dave “Ain’t no mountain high enough” Howe has planned the route below with some definitely uncharted territories so please join us as we try and avoid getting lost. Lights will mandatory as where we are going, there are no street lights !

Thursday evening off-road route

French Adventure planned for September – all welcome to join

Below is a message from Velos regular Peter.

Jim and I are intending to go on a cycle ride in France! We are proposing to go to either Caen or Cherbourg from Portsmouth with Brittany ferries.  The date that we have in mind is Monday 10th September. The intention being, to spend four nights in France, doing around fifty miles per day. Brittany ferries have already worked out good circular cycling routes for us, the detail can be found by following this link.

There are also .pdf files describing in detail both the Cherbourg and Caen routes. These routes are designed to avoid busy roads and to follow the numerous Velo tracks, both routes are around the 200 mile mark in total. We will arrange transport to get down to Portsmouth  and nothing has been decided about accommodation, needless to say we are out of the school holiday season so I do not envisage any major problems in this area.

If anybody is interested send an E-Mail to pthompso@btinternet.com

Charity Ride by Andrew & Jose

The sponsorships are picking up for our two intrepid endurance cyclists A & J Hetherington but they still need your support. They are riding all the way to Paris for for a fantastic charity, Action Medical Research, dedicated to to improving the health of babies and children in the UK. Please take the time to read about them on the sponsor page and, if you can, sponsor our two members in support of the tough task they have set themselves.

Thanks for listening and see you on the next ride.
