Velos ride for Sunday 18th November 2012

Sunday Ride

Following on from last Sunday’s fantastic ride in beautifully clear, autumn weather, the forecast looks dry again for tomorrow so, if you haven’t been out for a while, it’s going to be a great day to get back in the saddle.

Many thanks to Dan who has volunteered to lead the steady paced ride (with stops if needed).

As always, we plan to depart from the Rose & Crown at 10am.

Mid-week Rides

We would also like to remind everyone that we have regular mid-week, off-road rides on mountain bikes that are open for anyone to join.
On Tuesday evenings the ‘Pitstone Loonies’ meet at the corner of Rushendon Furlong and Marsworth Road at 7:30pm. These rides are energetic and can be technically challenging so would appeal to more experienced riders.

Thursday evenings is when the ‘Pitstone Puddlers’ meet. These rides are far less challenging and so suit off-road riders of all abilities. We start at Pitstone Roundabout (where Marsworth road meets Vicarage Road) at 7pm.

With both of these rides, good lights, a helmet and a spare tube are essential equipment.

Velos Ride for Sunday 28th October 2012

We here at Velos Towers have word from the Met Office that tomorrow’s ride will be somewhat fresh due to the recent drop in temperature. Please do wrap up warm and join us for what we hope will be a good ride to help shake off those colds and general malaise that hits us around this time of year.

As always, we will be meeting at 9:50am with plans to depart around 10am.

The Route

Vinghoe Velos Ride for Sunday 7th October 2012

Firstly apologies for the late communication this week for the Sunday ride.

Owing our tardiness this message is clashing with X-Factor and Strictly Come Dancing so we will get straight to the point.

Sunday Route

We haven’t yet got around to organising the rota to lead the steady pace version of the ride so we suggest that everyone have a discussion before the ride to collect ourselves in to the relevant groups.

Safe cycling.

Velos Ride for Sunday 16th September 2012

This week’s ride is the same one we published last week as we swapped it on the day for a “Normandy Landings” Training Ride. Again we are welcoming all abilities and plan to have a fast and normal paced groups leaving the Rose and Crown at 10am tomorrow.

The normal paced team will ride together as a group at the pace of the slowest person, so if you are concerned about how fast you can cycle, please don’t feel that you won’t be able to keep up with us. There will be an experienced lead rider who will know the way and also can assist with any punctures (but do please bring your own spare inner tube).

Planned route

Cycle safely.

Time for Tea?

Calling all Tea-Riders!

Following Mary’s multi-county churches excursion last week, we will possibly be sticking a little closer to home – or at least not clocking up quite so many miles!  Well done to all those who completed all or part of the Historic Churches Bike & Hike (37 miles this year) and a “Thank You” from Mary for the funds raised for Mentmore Church.

So, 10am at The Rose & Crown.

Tea & Cake? Or a breakfast fry-up/brunch?  The choice is yours!

News from the Tour de Normandy

After an early start on Monday, the finely tuned athletes of the Vinghoe Velos finally landed in Normandy, clearly flagging from our arduous journey. We sought refreshment in a harbour side restaurant in Cherbourg, here we made careful calorie counted selections from the menu along with the necessary levels of local isotonic beer to maintain our bodies in peak condition, before we checked into our hotel about a mile or so away. Upon arrival at the hotel, we were all in awe of Pete’s command of the French language, as was the the very polite French receptionist, who after 15 minutes of Pete’s pigeon French nonsense, finally said – in perfect English “so what exactly do you wan’t Mr Thompson?”

Once in the hotel we re-grouped in the bar to discuss tactic’s, who would lead the Peloton on the first day?
Then we set off to a local restaurant ‘Buffalo Grill’, after more food and ‘one or two more beers’, we retired back to the hotel. After some more beer, the hotel reception explained that they had now run out of beer (surely our commitment to achieving the peak of physical perfection could now not be brought into question). A truly magnificent effort by the whole team! Graham slurred some outstanding frontier gibberish and Dave Mander done some very impressive cheer leading moves, with only the aid of some balloons, we put this down to sheer exhaustion after really ‘pushing the envelope’.
Tuesday, stage 1 of the tour, the main Peloton left Cherbourg and proceeded around the North East coast of the Peninsula, past the Normandy beaches and on to Carentan. Again the whole team excelled themselves, exceeding all expectations, thankfully the local restaurants had just enough beer to ensure adequate levels of re-hydration we’re restored. Tomorrow we brace ourselves for stage 2, 82 Km further south to Vire.

Paralympics 2012 Velos Ride

In celebration of what is turning out to be a hugely successful 2012 Paralympics, we here at Velo Towers thought that it would be fitting to plan a route this week that takes us close by it’s birthplace, Stoke Mandeville.

Our resident bike mechanic, Dod, has kindly volunteered to lead out a more relaxed paced 12 mph group so … if you haven’t been out with us for a while and want to gently ease yourself back into cycling, this is a great opportunity to catch the decent weather and stretch those legs. We will be meeting at the Rose & Crown Ivinghoe on Sunday (2nd September) at around 9:50am with a view to setting off at 10am.

Saturday 10am – The Tea Ride

Cycling’s High Point of the week – hoping for a sunny one again tomorrow…

10am, The Rose & Crown.  Come and enjoy some gorgeous Buckinghamshire countryside with a good helping of Tea & Cake along the way.

And a reminder that next week is also the ‘Ride and Stride’ event – Saturday 8th September.   This is open to all Velo’s riders – Mary will put together a route visiting a few churches who will be serving tea and cakes.

Olympic Special Velos Ride

First up, many thanks for everyone who came out today on the Saturday ride tea ride. It continues to be popular attracting members as far afield as Antwerp and Long Marston.

Tomorrow we are blessed with a new route designed by our in-house Olympic Routemaster, Dave Howe.  It is a tad longer than usual but we are assured by Dave that there are absolutely no ‘hills’ whatsoever. Please make sure you bring a copy of the ride with you either on your GPS device or, in the more traditional way, on a piece of paper. Looks like it will be a warm 25 degrees as well so please bring something to keep you hydrated. The meeting place is the Rose & Crown, Ivinghoe as always and the time is 9:50am.
