The Ivinghoe Velos are a group of friends who ride together, mostly road rides with the occasional variation. We are not a club so there are no rules or expectations other than to ride safely and be courteous to other road users. We tend to be a mature bunch with most riders in the 50+ bracket but we would welcome younger riders to join in. We don’t race, we aim to leave no one behind on our rides, so come along and give riding in a group a try.
10.00am Tea Ride Every Saturday: This ride is suitable for all. About 10-15 miles and includes a tea stop about half way round. We will go at the pace of the slowest rider, so this is a good introduction to Velos rides if you are just starting out, or are just looking for a sociable ride. We aim to be back at The Rose and Crown by 12.00. Routes for this ride will be decided by the group on the day. There will generally be someone leading the ride although not always.
Sunday Rides: Our main ride day is Sunday when we have several different routes leaving the bus shelter in front of Ivinghoe church. The routes and timings are advertised on this website, which has a mailing list to you can keep updated with our plans. We also publish routes to our facebook page “Ivinghoe Velos Rear Hub” The routes on a Sunday range from 20 miles up to 60 miles (slightly less over winter months) The longer routes tend to be ridden at around 16mph while the shorter routes between 13mph and 15mph unless very flat!
Mid-week rides: We often ride out during the week and organise the outings via the facebook page “Ivinghoe Velos Rear Hub” these rides often morning rides, include a coffee stop along the way, or during summer months an evening ride during the longer daylight evenings.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/789658201073391/ for our regular communication where riders will post their ad-hoc ride plans.
We do not see ourselves as serious cyclists but keen hobby riders who enjoy the company of like minded sociable riders The focus is to support all members of the group to achieve what they want to from each and every ride and to have FUN. We aim to leave no one behind, this means the group will moderate the pace to keep everyone attached (riding in a close group save of the effort needed) This relies upon riders being realistic with the routes they choose to join, it’s no fun on a 16mph ride having to wait for someone riding at 12mph and equally it’s not great on a 13mph ride to have a rider going off the front at 17mph all the ride. Maybe if you are fairly new to cycling you can start with our shorter slower rides and build up to the longer faster options.
For Riders who regularly ride with us we have a strava group called Ivinghoe Velos Current Riders” this is for locals who have ridden with us within the last six months. We use this strava group to track our weekly progress and set occasional challenges.
We welcome ALL cyclists so please encourage friends from all over the area, the more the merrier. All of the main rides will be published on the website and if you subscribe to the mailing list you will be notified as soon as they are posted.
Something else for the more experienced Road Rider : If you are looking for rides that are a bit harder and have an earlier start, we can thoroughly recommend the nearby Tring Velo Club.
Boring legal stuff : Those who lead out a group, the route planners, those who send the postings out each week, and those who organise things like our trip to France, in no way make any assurances as to the safety of any rides organised under the ‘Ivnghoe Velos’ banner. Each participant is wholly responsible for their own safety, road worthiness of their steed, legal requirements to abide by the highway code and any insurances each individual feels are necessary.
